Prompt: In ten minutes, write a story of which this image makes you think.

My story:

She has a look of innocence about her, but I’ve long since learned not to trust what I can see. She watches me with keen eyes, almost too large not to hold knowledge beyond what is expected of her.

I speak quietly, unsure if I really want her to hear me, “Hello, there. Where are all of your friends?” She does not answer, which is both a relief and a reminder that I am alone apart from her.

Loneliness is a funny thing, for when I encounter another lonely creature, I not only empathize, but I fear. Looking into the black eyes of another turns quickly into a mirror of my own anxiety.

I turn to walk past, never trusting her enough to turn my back, but not daring to look her in the eyes any longer. “Goodbye,” I say, hoping she does not find me rude.
